Ode To Freedom

In celebration of the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, I wanted to talk about what I remember from the time. Honestly, I was pretty young (10 years old), but still have a very vivid image in my head of Leonard Bernstein conducting a multi-country orchestra in possibly one of the most moving performances of Beethoven’s 9th symphony… ever. I still remember Dad telling me that word “Joy” was modified to “Freedom” in honor of what was definitely one of the most important events of the 20th century. Enjoy the clip… not safe for work- may be too emotional :)

  • That's so cool that you were there that very year. I went in 1996 with my German class, I remember there was still a lot of construction going on... but not a trace of the old wall.
  • Berlin is awesome.

I was there in June '89 on a school exchange and painted the wall:

I really wanted to return in November '89 when the wall came down, but didn't get to go back until '99. By then there were few signs that the wall had been there.
